Scott Chambers' Notes From The Road - New Zealand

The following is Scott's first update from New Zealand:

Hello, Fran, and greetings from New Zealand -

We just played our second show in Christchurch and are now enroute to Wellington. Last night's show was a sellout, and the audience was enthusiastic. Here's excerpts from a review of the first night's show from The Press, Christchurch's newspaper...

"Not long after the world tour that has brought them together after almost 20 years, and playing in New Zealand for the first time, Bread sounded terrific - as ageless as their melodies...Singer/songwriter David Gate's silky high tenor/falsetto has lost none of its distinctive beauty.....Nor has he lost his ability to summon a lump to the throat, something he proved even as he performed lesser-known recent compositions like "Love is Always Seventeen" and "Mirror, Mirror." ....The band did the right thing by reproducing the songs faithfully, all the nuances intact thanks partly to the two additional Nashville guitarists and a ten-piece string section from Christchurch.....As befitting a group of sessions supremos, each member was given time in the spotlight. Keyboardist Larry Knechtel took a turn - as he did on the original - for Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," and guitarist James Griffin sang the Carpenter's hit he wrote, "For All We Know."....Griffin's vocals, so essential to the group's harmonies, were one of the highlights of the night. Drummer Mike Botts chimed in with a toe tapping honky-tonk tune....But it was intimate material like "If" - the encore - and "Diary" that really pulled at the heart strings, for which Bread were rewarded with a standing ovation."

The dots above indicate things I've omitted from the review, mostly because I'm not much at touch typing, so it takes me a while to transcribe. Sorry I don't have a scanner. The reviewer's intent is intact, and I don't think I've left out anything of interest. That's it for now, and I'll keep you posted as we continue on through New Zealand and Australia. Best wishes to you.

Scott
