Rising To The Occasion

The following appeared in The Mail & Guardian (South Africa) and was written by Glynis O'Hara on October 18, 1996:

If you can cope with a dose of nostalgia, Bread in concert were superb. They delivered an evening of melody, quality vocal harmonies and lots of acoustic guitar. Even I, for whom the pop music of the Seventies is a large black hole, remember Guitar Man, Baby I'm-a Want You, Make It With You and Everything I Own.

David Gates, sporting a black cowboy hat, glittering waistcoat, bow-tie, white shirt and black jeans, made it the gentlest, sweetest evening. What a relief to sit down for a concert and not have your eardrums shattered by the noise or your eyes stream from the smoke. Although they did do one or two kick-ass rock numbers - as Gates said, "sometimes we're Bread Zeppelin."

Backed by a ten-person string section from the Transvaal Philharmonic Orchestra, they were also pretty classical. And there were no complaints about the quality of the voices - remember Gates is well into his 50s.

The a capella singing and humour of Not The Midnight Mass were a perfect complement to Bread. As Terrence Reis deadpanned: "We're very, very proud to annouce that Bread will be closing for us, and please - give them a big round of applause when they come on."

Beacuse of fan demand, said the PRs, an extra concert has been arranged for October 19 at the Standard Bank Arena. The Pretoria concert originally scheduled for October 18 has been canceled. The group also appear in Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town on October 20, 22 and 24 respectively.
