The following appeared in the Herald Sun (Australia) [written by Bryan Patterson] on September 29, 1996:
David Gates wonders why he is in Melbourne on a rainy day promoting the re-formed 1970's soft-rock band Bread.
The man who wrote and sang those sensitive hits Guitar Man, Everything I Own, Baby I'm-a Want You and Make It With You does not need the money.
"Hell no," he says. "Some radio station somewhere in the world seems to be playing one of them every minute of the day so that's not why we are back."
"But if you have ever been up on a stage and looked down and seen people mouthing the words to something you've written, you'll understand what a high that is. That's why we're back."
Bread, with original members Gates, fellow songwriter and bassist James Griffin, drummer Mike Botts and guitarist Larry Knechtel, play the Palais Theatre with a string section on December 2 as part of the Bread World Tour.
Concert tickets go on sale tomorrow.
